Your lips are extremely delicate and can become sore fairly easily, especially during the cold winter months.

Excessive licking your lips, cold environments and use of products full of chemicals can cause your lips to become sore, dried out and chapped. It’s much better to have smooth, hydrated, kissable lips, especially with all the mistletoe starting to pop up everywhere!

USE A LIP SCRUB

Each time you exfoliate your skin, which should only be a few times a week, exfoliate your lips too. Some companies offer fab lip scrub products that you can literally lick off of your lips after scrubbing, or you can create a scrub at home yourself using coconut oil and brown sugar. This will help to remove dry skin especially if you use a hydrating lip balm afterward, giving you a smooth base for lipstick.

USE HYDRATING LIP PRODUCTS

When choosing your winter lipsticks (berry colours are in this season!), choose hydrating formulas. If you are particularly susceptible to parched lips, stay away from matte lipsticks as they will dry out your lips even more and will highlight chapped lips. You should always apply a hydrating lip balm before your lipstick as well, as this will give your lips some extra moisture and will help your lipstick to stay on for longer.

DRINK PLENTY OF WATER

Drinking water will keep those lips hydrated and less likely to chap.

I think we mention this in EVERY blog post about skincare, but it always seems to come back to the same thing. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER. It’s not only important for skincare, but also for general health too.

ADD LIP BALM TO YOUR EVENING SKINCARE ROUTINE

When you go to bed, I’m sure you have a routine of products you like to use on your skin. Now is the time to add a hydrating lip balm to that regime. It should be the last thing you do before you get in bed, as the lip balm will sink in over night leaving you with soft, hydrated lips in the morning.

HIDE YOUR LIPS FROM THE WEATHER

When you go outside, shield your lips from the elements. In the summer or all year round, wear a lip balm that contains SPF to protect your lips from the harmful rays. In the colder months, wrap your scarf over your face. This is good practice for protecting your entire face, not just your lips, from the harsh, icy winds.
