Sunscreen Safety Concerns

The FDA sunscreen safety review, published 24/09/2021, has confirmed Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide to be the only broad-spectrum UV Filters considered safe and effective, whilst the 12 UV Filters in the table have been identified as potentially toxic and/or carcinogenic: The ingredients oxybenzone, octinoxate, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and avobenzone are all systemically absorbed into the body after one use, according to the studies published by the FDA. The agency also found they could be detected on the skin and in the blood weeks after they had last been used.

Oxybenzone, octinoxate, and other UV chemical filters have been linked to hormone disruption, including harming the proper function of the female hormones in animals, their fertility and the neurological development of their offspring.

Exposure to oxybenzone during pregnancy was recently shown to damage neurons and affect the developing brain of the fetus in mice. Oxybenzone, homosalate, and other chemical filters were also shown to interfere with the functions of human sperm, and oxybenzone has been associated with lower testosterone levels in adolescent boys.

Aluminium - As an oxidant, the aluminium in sunscreen might contribute to oxidative damage in the skin, increasing the risk of cancer. One sunscreen that was analysed for aluminium concentration, a single application would provide 200mg of aluminium.

Zinc Oxide is Pool Safe

Chemical UV filters of concern: Avobenzone, Octocrylene, 4-MBC, Octyl methoxycinnamate, Oxybenzone. "The relatively smaller volume of these pools compared to larger pools may increase the concentration of the UV filters in the pool and their potential interactions with materials of human origin (urine, sweat, cosmetics, skin cells, and hair) to the levels of toxicity concerns for children through the creation of disinfection by-products (DBP)."

Zinc Oxide is Pregnancy & Child Safe

The FDA's release published on 24/08/2021 stated "Infants are at greater risk than adults of sunscreen side effects".

Zinc oxide is considered safe for infants by the FDA and is even present at up to 40% in nappy rash creams. Therefore, if there is a situation where sun protection such as protective clothing or shade is not available the safest option for babies is a Natural Zinc based Sunscreen

Apply to skin in generous amounts over all exposed areas 20 minutes before sun exposure
Every 2 hours and/or immediately after sweating, swimming, or toweling
