How Safe Is Your Sunscreen?

It’s time to get serious about using sunscreens. But which one do you think is better and safer for your skin?

Skincare experts, wellness advocates and healthcare professionals debate the safety of these products. This raises a question: could sunscreens, the very shield we rely on against harmful UV rays, pose risks to our health?

Finding a balance between effective sun protection and potential health impacts is important. As we get into this important conversation, it's best to stay informed, making choices that prioritise both skin safety and overall well-being.

Finding a balance between effective sun protection and potential health impacts is important. As we get into this important conversation, it's best to stay informed, making choices that prioritise both skin safety and overall well-being.

What Is Considered Safe? Is It Necessary to Inspect the Label?

The FDA assures the safety of sunscreen usage, emphasising its significant advantage in preventing life-threatening skin cancers.

However, the FDA has been encouraging manufacturers to conduct further research on how sunscreen is absorbed through the skin. This aims to confirm the safety of ingredients ensuring protection for users.

Which Sunscreen Ingredients Should You Avoid?

This table presents the 12 UV Filters that have been identified as potentially harmful and toxic to our bodies and are often used in Chemical Sunscreens.

These active sunscreen ingredients are said to be the highest risk due to their harmful nature.

Their elevated toxicity has led to being banned in 7 countries and regions globally, emphasising the urgent need for awareness and caution in their usage.

How Concerned Should One Be About Chemical Sunscreens?

Fortunately, nowadays, most skincare brands offer both chemical and mineral formulations. While mineral sunscreens can feel denser and some can leave a visible residue, they are largely non-comedogenic and are associated with fewer skin irritations compared to their chemical counterparts.

The primary disadvantage of mineral sunscreen is its tendency to appear white or chalky upon application, especially on darker skin tones, resulting in a greyish hue. However, innovation in formulating these natural sunscreens and developments with some non-nano Zinc Oxide manufacturers have gone a long way to addressing this issue. Also, the introduction of tinted mineral sunscreens particularly for the face, provides a solution that looks similar to makeup while eliminating any white cast.

What’s a Safe Sunscreen?

There are two kinds of sunscreens. Mineral sunscreens, typically containing titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, are derived from tiny metallic particles not absorbed by the body. These particles create a thin layer that physically blocks and scatters the sun’s rays, preventing ultraviolet light from being absorbed. Chemical sunscreens, by contrast, use compounds that filter these rays by creating a chemical reaction on the skin’s surface before they damage the skin but these ingredients are readily absorbed through the skin.
