As we move through our 30s and enter our 40s, for many this can be a difficult adjustment. Society makes us feel we should look a certain way, with women over 40 being under-represented in the media. This can make us feel like we are no longer beautiful, or feel less attractive than we did in our 20s and 30s.
The ageing process should be embraced, and instead of focusing on what we feel we have lost, we should feel positive about what we have gained. While for some this may seem like an impossible challenge, just a few tweaks to how you approach life in your 40s can help you feel youthful and beautiful, just like you should…
ALIGNING WITH NATURE
Regardless of how you have lived your life so far, it’s never too late to start embracing nature and all the wonderful benefits it has to offer. As we age, it can be all too tempting to invest in chemical-packed products that promise to turn back the hands of time, but at this stage in our lives, we should be prioritising our health, providing our skin and bodies with essential nutrients and vitamins.
At the centre of ageing is of course our skin. How you care for your skin at this age can make a huge difference, for now, and for the future. While products that use artificial ingredients may seem to have a positive effect now, they do not address what’s really important, and that’s skin health.
Where possible, choose to use plant-based and organic products on your skin, free from nasties. Focus on products that have more of an emphasis on nourishment, and put skin health, rather than appearance first. By prioritising skin health, you may find your skin looks better than ever before. When our skin is healthy, it glows and appears more clear and supple. With the right support, collagen production is boosted, and fine lines and wrinkles are improved, for skin that looks younger but is healthy too.
NOURISH YOUR BODY AND SOUL
Diet, exercise, hydration and fresh air are all essential to feeling beautiful and confident no matter your age. Make these a priority in your life, getting out for a walk in the fresh air every day, making sure you drink at least 2 litres of water daily and fueling your body with a healthy, nutrient-dense diet. Not only will this improve your skin and hair, but it will also make you feel full of energy too.
One of the most challenging aspects of becoming older is accepting the changes you see in yourself, and seeing these in a positive light. While the above lifestyle changes will go a long way towards helping here, it’s important to address that you may have to work purposefully on your mindset too. As a starting point, try writing down one thing each day about yourself that you love, or something that you like about yourself or your life now, that you wouldn’t have had in your 20s. For example, you might write down that you love your laughter lines, as they are a sign of all the joy you have experienced in your life so far.
Be mindful when it comes to the ageing process, accept how it might make you feel, and work to create a positive mindset instead. Choosing to take greater care of yourself can only be a positive thing, after all.
