11 Years of Beautiful Skin: A Letter From Our Founder
Sophie Oliver on eleven years of building a business on uncompromising values, and why growing well matters more than growing fast.
Eleven years on, I’m still learning every day.
That might not sound like the sort of thing you'd expect to read in an anniversary letter. But if there's one thing building Baie Botanique has taught me, it's that growing well is not the same as growing fast. The brands, the businesses, the skincare routines that last are the ones that root down deeply rather than spread thin.
So this letter isn't about how far we've come. It's about what it's actually meant to grow.
What "11 Years of Beautiful Skin" Means to Me
When I think about the botanicals we've worked with since the very beginning (the roses, the sea buckthorn, the adaptogens and plant-derived actives that anchor our formulations), what strikes me is how little they seem to be doing on the surface. A rose doesn't announce itself in February. It does its quiet, patient work underground. And then, when the conditions are right, there it is.
That's how I've come to think about this brand.
The years that felt hardest weren't always the ones where the least was happening. Sometimes the most important growth is the kind you can't see yet: the formulation we spent eighteen months getting right before a single person tried it; the ingredient sourcing decision that cost us more than it needed to; the recycling programme we launched knowing it would eat into our margins, and launched anyway.
None of that was visible to our customers at the time. But it was all part of growing well.

What Has Grown
Our community has grown in a way I didn't quite anticipate. The people who've written to us after trying Rose Renew for the first time, the customers who've been with us since those early years and still recommend us to their friends, and the conversations we have about what people are really looking for from their skincare have all been some of the most unexpected rewards of this journey.
Some of the most meaningful messages arrive in the most unexpected ways. Customers often tuck little handwritten notes into the parcels when they return their empty products through our recycling programme. Sometimes they tell us which product they loved, sometimes how their skin has changed, and sometimes it is simply a thank-you. I keep many of them. They are a reminder that behind every order is a real person who chose to trust us with their skin.
I started Baie Botanique because I couldn't find products that met my standards. I wanted something clean, effective, and genuinely luxurious, and I couldn't find anything that ticked all three. What I didn't anticipate was that so many other people were feeling exactly the same gap.
Knowing that our formulations are making a real difference to how people's skin feels, and to how they think about what they're putting on their bodies, that is what success looks like to me. Not the forty-nine awards, though we're grateful for every one of them. Not the recognition. It's the moment someone tells us their skin has changed, or leaves us one of those handwritten notes, knowing we've become part of their daily routine. That's it.
"Success is having created something that really impacts people's lives. Creating something that actually betters people's lives and solves a real problem for people."
Our understanding of skin has also grown. Each year, we learn more about what skin actually needs at different stages of life and what it doesn't need. The formulations have become quieter in some ways: fewer ingredients, doing more. That kind of editing only comes with time.
What Hasn't Changed
I've been asked, more than once, whether I've ever been tempted to compromise on ingredients: to use something cheaper, something more conventional, to make the numbers easier. The answer is no. That line hasn't moved, and it won't.
What I put on my skin, what I put in my body: there is no compromise there. That was true when I started Baie Botanique, and it's still true now. If anything, eleven years of working in this space have made me more certain of it, not less.
The same goes for our commitment to sustainability. We spend between £5 and £10 for every product that comes back to us through our recycling programme. It's a significant cost. Some people question whether it's worth it. But we are not willing to leave a footprint we don't have to leave. That hasn't changed either.
The People Who Make This Possible
I want to say something about the team, because building this has never been a solo effort.
I have an incredible group of people around me who make the day-to-day of Baie Botanique possible. Without them, none of this would function. The juggle of running a business (the real one, not the curated version) requires people who believe in what you're building and show up for it consistently. I am genuinely grateful for every one of them.
And to you: the people who've chosen to buy from us, recommended us, trusted us with your skin: thank you. A small brand survives on word of mouth and genuine belief. You have given us both, and we don't take either for granted.
What Comes Next
I'll be honest: I've never been one for long-range plans. What I know is that the principles we started with are the principles we're continuing with. Clean. Effective. Luxurious. No synthetic ingredients. No shortcuts on ethics. No pretending it's easy when it isn't.
If I could tell my 2015 self anything, it would be this: be prepared for a long haul and enjoy the journey as much as possible. I'm not sure I enjoyed enough of it along the way. But I'm enjoying this moment.
There is more to come. More formulations in progress, more gaps to fill, more things I want to create for myself and hope will be exactly what you've been looking for too. But that's for another day.
For now: eleven years. Eleven years of beautiful skin.
Thank you for growing with us.
